Father of Egoism

: Max Stirner? The philosophizing petit bourgeois to whom Karl Marx had given the brush-off? The anarchist, egoist, nihilist, the crude precursor of Nietzsche? Yes, he. (From: Bernd Laska Bio.)

Of a member of the Berlin Community against the Publication to the 57 Clergymen:
"The Christian Sunday Celebration(Mass), A Word of Love to Our Congregation."

Dear Brothers and Sisters!

A word of love was directed at us; we are not permitted to close our ears. On the first day of this year, a pamphlet will be handed out, in the church, to the church-goers of Berlin; it carries the title: "The Christian Sunday Celebration. A word of love to our congregation," and it concerns us all deeply. Before we later take him to heart in the particular, we include the same content written together in the few words of the second page: "Given that it is undeniable, that the corruption of the church itself is most outwardly apparent by the desecration of the parochial holidays, and the ranks of other religious collectives by nature, like is being perpetrated under us these days, the biggest seize the initiative etc., so for now we offer our congregation the following writing, 'About the Christian Sunday Celebration,' not meaning that these concerns be the paramount essence to Christian piety, but because we believe, that a greater receptivity for the Supreme, that is the Christian truth and love, and an enhanced activity will be attained, when the holy days are given back their original purpose [27], namely the tranquility of work, the earnest contemplation of the self, and attention to the word of God." So we of the seven and fifty Protestant clergy, whose names are signed at the end, are made blatantly [responsible] for the established 'corruption of the church' and accused of un-churchlike behavior and goings-on.

Anyone who, until now, has not wanted to believe it, that the devoted are always becoming fewer and the Christian churches always emptier, he now experiences the irrefutable fact from those, who can, without doubt, give above all the best information. They call us back into the forsaken home, beckoning the undutiful children back to them once again with fatherly kindness; but we have driven off the rooms of the church and transcended, unknowingly, the constraints of devout religion and have only now become aware of our involuntary escape by the their admonishing call. Let us be held legally because of our current conditions and the content-heavy word, that "the decline of the church is undeniable", according to all the exhaustively pondered angles, vacuously in front of his returnable[?] confession. Nothing does serves us so well, as an openness to ourselves, and nothing harms us so badly, as when we hide an undeniable fact from ourselves out of fear and do not want to know it because of that fear, which after all we cannot change or deny. Gather your loved ones, your spirit, and above all gather your courage to this end!

They encourage us to change, [but] remind us only that we are already out beyond the real old homeland and in a strange one.[All] thanks to them, in whose reality we don't yet dare to believe again, since they instruct us so closely through our progress. They say to us: you are no longer religious-minded!

If we aren't, it is not because they are more so (and let us not affect ourselves by hypocrisy and disheartened by timidity, [28] so we cannot deceive ourselves more ready thereover, that those accusations hurt us fully in certain respects), so we ask ourselves involuntarily: What art though now, then? And art though, therefore, inferior, because thou art not more in line with the old, churchly style?

Well, the accusation, hurled at our conscience in a susceptible hour, has no doubt summoned mastery, and bred contrition out of our fear, so that we might visit the scrupulous church in the future—for some time the good purpose. But as you took so long, so we are again the old sinner. So then, the remorse is pushing us towards penance, and boredom of penance is pushing us to sin again. Their fate is lamentable, those who are dissatisfied with their own life, even though it only follows the course of time, but are not able to improve. They have not the strength to swim against the tide of time, nor the courage and sense of freedom to leave its tides and take their peace of mind. They gladly want to be pious Christians and they would also like to change with the time and with their apparent indifference to Christianity or possibly even contradict certain of its statements, if only it were the old faith and the old fear. But as they are, they float between heaven and earth, too heavy to rise and too light to fall: a desperate state. For they drag on the advantages of such souls as pastors, and they will capture many. But we must also save many.

See there, a shivering deer
Flee from the wolves in the snow!
Let it be, so it can grow warm!

What in all the world makes us so cold and indifferent, what lacking from us? We are missing an enthusiasm [29] which glows through the whole body, which absorbs all the doubts of thought and all the temptations of the senses in a pure flame, which declared death to the resurrection! We long after such enthusiasm!

Do you know, by chance, how the white church enthuses you so? Does the sermon of the minister pierce the enthusiasm in you, the joyous [thing] brewing on the battlefield of death, to preach it, a new gospel, to you, with which Luther once enraptured the world and shook up open minds from their lethargic exhaustion? Or does your mind need not one new revelation of truth? Are you still invariably satisfied with that fatalistic resignation, so as to remember only one, do you prefer the silent suffering, when the law only tried to provide, and the law does not care for you later? Do you want to be forever obedient on earth, and only released in heaven? This one does not speak to you; you act more reasonably than you think. You will only remain yourself, in your constant acts not the same, just because you will still be enchanted by varied old beliefs and fears. Though, normally, you take care to suffer not-violence, apart from here, when you fear your right to claim yourself; unfortunately, though, you often fear at all and you fall from your power and, with that, away from God, only because you take it literally that the other cheek should hold out on the one which was struck. It's good when you forgive a personal insult, but from the same principle, you sell also your inalienable rights and let yourself be treated as children, when your men had to keep to keep indelible the law that let them patronize you; when the injustice is dishonorable, not one leads their speech with their own mouth; you are abject, when you ought to stand with their men, you are machines, when you should be spirits that are free themselves.

[30]Are you just so indifferent to the kingdom of this world, and only longing for heaven, as your pastor would like to see you? Are you insensitive to the things of the Earth, the more you have about the Sky? Do you want to hear from your preachers that you shall have to give up everything here in order to receive the reward; how you should chastise yourself and renounce all earthly pleasures, to be allowed to worship in heaven? Are you, in a word, merely future citizens of heaven, and not of Earth? If you are also the latter, will you not then receive instruction on what is proper for all citizens in the world? Is it only about the good, patient meekness, or should one be a man who feels himself and does not want to be constrained, if he does follow his path alone?

Let the teachers, the ones called preachers, tell you what a man's worth may be; without that, you are bound to see only the old fashioned wisdom they recite and that adorns the Christians, and you will visit their churches with zeal and joy. The principle of academic freedom will be proclaimed, and every free teacher will be part of a huge, willing, and tireless audience gathered around! Are they not men, before they are Christians, and are still men even after they become Christians? Why do you want to know the cause of the Christian's determination and professionalism, and why not learn from what makes men worthy? Because he thinks if he only were a Christian, thus he would truly be a man! I want you to admit, that you see being a true Christian as synonymous with being a true man. Even so, it is your single purpose, to search for the truly human. But what if, after all, that which is Christian does not coincide with that which is truly human? To the extent that is currently the case, I must be silent, as I do not enjoy academic freedom. But I will refer you to Luther. What a Christian was in his time was inhuman and poor. Did he not bring about in his misery academic freedom, the forbidden, this Christian in his misery? He asked of himself and the world the question, of what a true Christian was. Unrestrained, he later did research, and because he understood the Bible, he could preach without fear. If three centuries of unrelenting research had clarified the depths of God and enlightenment, but gave the biblical, and not the true? Should we continue the search, while so many men suffer? Should we commit ourselves to Christianity, even at the sacrifice of humans? Should we want to be Christians, even at this price, or any price? "The true Christian, that is the true man!" Well then, this teaches us what the true man is, and teaches us we are true Christians. We know nothing of Christianity if it is not truly human. Let me now confront the teachers who try to convince me with their weighty words, and I will follow them only if they convince me that it is right to do so. Thus far, they have not convinced me, but I will not accept their beliefs strictly on faith. I refuse to depend on anything, not even what I may or may not have in my core. The minister is obliged to memorize the scriptures; or is it his job to convince me about the spirit that dwells inside me and tell me about myself and my divine origin that only I need to know about? That is the priest, he who imperiously demands my faith; this brother and the man who leads me just to be myself, it's certain that I will never go off by myself if I am ever convinced. Only he who is human, and completely sure of who he is, and the true man is the eternal spirit. God will always strive to be like the person who contains him: God is my best part, my innermost being, or rather my best and true self. God is man, that is the doctrine of Christ. God is he who has entered the sanctuary of his own being and who is one with the father. Christ teaches us that we should be Christians and that is truly the source of the second coming. Christ can only return to the earth if he remains in the hearts of the Christians. Do you think this is blasphemy? Oh no, the God whom we proclaim with Christ's prophetic words, the returned Christ, is celebrated with these words. Let your teacher lead you to yourself, and as she leaves behind the overused words, as if to lead you to God, and you will hear the words with love. However, they can only help lead you to God when they lead you to yourself. And the words are not lies, but are abused, and the faithful are led astray! They teach you that God is outside yourself, another being, but you should build your temple inside yourself. It would be a different story, if you serve yourself best and if a stranger wanted to please you. You treat your servants like children, but you are not lenient and responsible parents. You replaced the kindly father with a dark master, but the spirits who free themselves are servants of God in ways you are not. "But you shall be perfect, even as your father in heaven is perfect."

You have said that you need to have religion in addition to your other believes. You perceive, such as your God and the world perceives, you love, so you all love, you search, so searches your God, you have, so you all have, you seek first a higher consciousness, then your mind becomes another, shut. Nothing was so hidden from you as your own self; nothing can you so obviously be as yourself: and also therein it reveals your God-seeking spirit. And your preachers will inquire after you only if you are truly contented, and you will always be rejected by your God, the God who is not yourself. Can you ever truly be with Him? Only with yourself alone can you be truly united, and with your god even the most intimate connection he must remain a stranger, a man and a father unapproachable in his majesty. Then it dashes the humility of you who needs a master, and you can now admit that you are yourself, and you want to be, and admit to yourself that you do have the courage to no longer hide, that you do not fear to do what your unconscious thinks, for you are not evil, but your clergy tells you that you have lost your religion.

You wander more in the old customary ways and think that there are good Christians; yet take these words of your pastors to heart and let them not go unheard and unnoticed: they, whose job it is to be your teachers, preach to you that Christians are bad.  Yes, come freely to this knowledge and confess it: we are none of us believers!  We no longer truly believe in the old God, and if we could only know, that without Him the world could come into being and exist, so we would not need all of these unfounded guesses.  And if you ended your confessions and lay down the burden of your self-deception, and do this at least honestly, so then would your teachers call for freedom of speech, and the inalienable freedom of teaching. You will hardly lose what you have always wished for, but will win much which you in your dreamlike devotion to the old never dared to dream.

Let us now discuss the present, and look more closely at "our common word of love". Your pastor, the "man to whom the office of God's word has been entrusted", wants one word of sincerity and love about the celebration of our Christian Sunday—and Festivals meant for you. We dwell a moment on this, the "Entrusted office of the Divine Word". Does this mean that the Authority teaches us what they understand to be true, what they feel and think, and reveal to us these truths, which they in their earnest endeavors have found to be parts of the eternal truth; or is it the Authority, the literal Bible, true and without meddling by a mediator meant to explain, and only the world of the bible as the divine word to worship? No one among you can doubt that the Christian preacher is dependent only upon the latter. It will not be easy to find among you those whose devotions were dampened due to a lack of fervent sermons, in which a fanatic "servant of the divine word" uses all possible tricks of ingenuity on the words of the Bible turned and argued, and came out to a tolerable sense.

We must also consider the excuses of churchgoers, which have considerable sway; their arguments are unsophisticated despite their perpetrators convictions. However, their reprimands do have value and the godless Christians stringently believe in them. They should not excuse themselves by saying that "they serve the silent God in their own way" because the righteous "blessing could come to them only from worshiping God together through song, prayer and devout meditation on the divine," just as they should not say that "you should worship through nature" because the "nature is hiding God and only by meditating on the Word of God can you truly understand the divine." These words are intended to excuse lack of church attendance. Because if this "excuse were open, there might be so few people, but the All-Knowing God can see any person's heart and life" but at the same time "without this godly knowledge, who can say that a man who does not have time to attend church is not also a good man, a good citizen and even a good Christian." Anyone who respects the sanctity of the Sabbath, just one of God's commandments and "whoever keeps to the law and does not sin is not guilty." This is all very well and good, and the righteous have reasons for their silence, but he who fears God and shuns his service, how can we abide with all of these excuses? But us, we do not fear God, we seek no excuses and you need the excuse, because we have the right of things. We avoid the church as long as the word of God is enslaved to their letters and as long as his children cannot speak as free spirits.

The admonition of the Sabbath and the typical excuses can no longer justify ignoring "the memory of that which is needed for a blessed celebration of our Christian day of rest." We rage against all of those whose wrongs have hurt their servants and subordinates by disallowing them their day of rest. We, who care as much about the holiness of the human mind as the undersigned Protestant clergy, we will not ignore such a serious warning. But why do our religious leaders not realize who the true enemy are "with their base aspirations and heartless indifference"? With the truly faithful, the fight has never been particularly unique. A very different enemy now is heading toward them, and they must fight it if they are not to fail. Because Christ will return on this battlefield!

Why should we long for the time past and try to bring back the good old days when "On Saturdays work ended slightly earlier than usual, then we cleaned the house so that on Sunday even the beginning of the morning was uninterrupted from rest. Then in the morning the holy day began peace and silence because all unnecessary work was already taken care of. And silence reigned over the house, even in city streets. Cars were seldom heard, shops were closed and public transportation absent; nothing interrupted the quiet of the Sabbath. Then the whole family gathered to worship. They read a portion of the Bible, usually the Gospels and the Epistle of the Sabbath, and they sang a song in praise of God.

Now finally the conclusion: "With you it is, whether the shrines of our religion, whether the greatest blessing that God has given us, our descendants will be delivered unscathed, or whether we should go deeper and lost what is true, genuine piety, an innocent sense, love, discipline, and good manners still with us. May God open your eyes and hearts to recognize the good and - to choose!" Yes, he should show them to you! For you must decide whether the religious function or the moral and courageous freedom will prevail henceforth. Innocent sense but love, discipline and good morals are therefore not truly gone, but are noble and beautiful and can rise again. -- There was a time when the Roman pagan priests called woe to the people, whose temple stood empty, but it was the time when the Christian churches had few worshipers to manage. The empty temple, it was a real sign of a fulfilling time!

Now that the church is "in decline" we want our clergy to use their shining words to lead us back, they as the Christian pastors should know that no one must "grasp at old wineskins, where most of the wineskins are so differently torn, and spilled, and the bottles broken. But the majority should be transferred into new bottles, so that it can all be kept." It would be possible to fill their churches again, even though the old church is, as it has been supposed, truly in decline if they tried to bring joy to their congregations rather than putting wooden splinters in their eyes. So again I scold their congregations, for listening to an obligation-bound speaker, who they say they may hear without being patronized, which is the spirit that can roam forever free, in the spirit of the divine. But they say you must be noble and sacred and do not speak of the reality of being human even though the words from the depth of his heart did not bring word of honest men but a lifeless and petrified truth. - He fought for you, your preacher of the divine word, for your freedom of speech and we find ourselves with a joy for you; do this first and foremost from their own servants purpose, then you can free people to invite you in; sacrificed on the altar of the terrible fear of heroism and you should be our beloved leader; celebrate the festive day of the academic freedom won, we all like to celebrate with you on Sunday. Then your churches will be full, and are heroes of free speech at all eager crowds gather. But the Church, - you yourself have spoken the irrevocable word - the church will still fade if you only look for the truth in form rather than in spirit and truth! One generation of free people will blossom, and if you allow it, a new Christianity, which is in spirit and meaning the same as the old, a world religion is maturing, that is, in biblical terms: In every nation he who fears God and does right, it is pleasant!

Many of my more important points will be questioned because I have put them forward with more rashness than thoughtful justification--such are the limits of containing this article to just a few pages--but it can give you another point of view, a lenient and forgiving preacher of truth, and you may soon be able to desire further instruction from your pulpits. So I take my leave of you and I hope for your awakening. I speak not just to the laymen, but I direct my words also to the clergy. Let us see when and where we meet again, as free people seeing eye to eye.
