I am an Anarchist. I believe in liberty, absolute, unlimited. I believe that every man, woman and child should be free. But I do not believe in all the absurdities garbed and masked behind the word Anarchy, as expounded by many of its professed apostles. I do not believe that Anarchy stands for unorganized chaos, or that liberty leads to planless pandemonium. I believe in social organization, with cooperation as the basic principle. In our last paper we noted the change in men's ideas of the world and their own place in it, which has resulted from the increased mental activity of the last four hundred years; and we saw how the splendid conquests of human thinking-power have led to excessive and superstitious reverence for that one faculty. Excessive, because it contemptuously excludes the rest (the greater part) of men's nature; superstitious, because it erects reason into a sort of internal Mumbo Jumbo--mysteriously capable of comprehending, molding, and controlling the will, feeling and action of the whole human being and the whole society. Long ago the biologist Paul Sears described ecology as the “subversive science”, and there is no doubt that when I first became involved in environmental issues in the 1960’s, ecology was seen very much as a radical movement. The writings of Barry Commoner and Murray Bookchin emphasized that we were confronting an impending ecological crisis, and that the roots of this crisis lay firmly with an economic system — capitalism — that was geared not to human well-being but to the generation of profit, that saw no limit to growth or technology, even celebrating the achievements of the “megamachine”. Ultimately it was felt, by both Commoner and Bookchin, that capitalism was destructive not only to ourselves but to the whole fabric of life on the planet. The Cuban Libertarian Movement tries to articulate and increase anti-authoritarian revolutionary activism in Cuba, in a particular way and in the American continent in general, with the aim of building a more effective anarchist movement that actively participates in the struggles of the real movement of l @ s oppressed for the control of their lives and in the international countercultural resistance. We are not just another anarchist organization, much less, a closed circle of "chosen ones" that seeks to monopolize or claim the representation of Cuban anarchism.
